PART THREE

Move thy tongue,

For silence is a sign of discontent.

—Elizabeth Cary

The Tragedy of Mariam, 1613

Fare you well, my dove

1.

Mother insists

we keep our cottage in the village

when Father becomes advisor to the new king.

We can’t live there,

for Father must be close at hand

as the new king rules a grieving kingdom.

But we return to the cottage often,

Mother and I, to visit with neighbors,

share their griefs and joys.

Mother brings herbs and flowers

from the castle’s gardens

to make balms and tinctures

that she shares with all she can.

On our return to the castle one day

a royal carriage passes us by.

The prince has returned.

Mother’s voice is tender.

She was young when she lost her parents.

No doubt she’s already concocting

a balm to soothe his grieving soul.
